Our Story

Our Story

I developed eczema when I was 8 years old, and I know firsthand the frustration that comes with it. Finding products that are truly gentle — that don’t sting, irritate, or make things worse — always felt impossible. I remember my mum applying prescription ointments that gave temporary relief, but the eczema always came back, often worse than before.

Growing up, I felt embarrassed about my skin and would hide it under clothes. Those feelings stayed with me well into adulthood, until 2019, when I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I’ve always been fascinated by the power of nature and its ability to nurture, soothe, and heal. As an Afro-Indigenous Colombian, I grew up hearing stories of how my ancestors knew the healing capacity of each root, plant, and flower. Inspired by their wisdom, and by the Māori plant knowledge I’ve learned living in Aotearoa New Zealand, I began to experiment.

What started as a personal mission turned into years of trial and error — long days and nights perfecting formulas that my own skin would love. Along the way, I discovered that New Zealand not only has one of the highest rates of eczema in the world, but also some of the most incredible native plants to help soothe and support the skin.

This is how Dear Nature by Mery was born. Every product is made with love and a deep respect for both my cultural heritage, the Maori knowledge,  and the plants that make it possible. While my products may not cure your condition, they are carefully crafted to soothe, nourish, and protect even the most sensitive skin — without triggering flare-ups.

I hope you feel as cared for using these products as I felt creating them.

Are your products suitable for eczema-prone skin?

Yes — our products are lovingly formulated with sensitive and eczema-prone skin in mind.

Each blend is made with gentle, plant-derived ingredients known to calm, hydrate, and protect the skin’s natural barrier.
We never use synthetic fragrances, harsh alcohols, or essential oils that can irritate delicate skin — only pure, soothing botanicals that nurture balance and comfort.

The essential oils we do include are chosen for their proven skin-healing and anti-inflammatory properties, and are always used at safe, skin-friendly levels.

Are your products safe for sensitive skin?

Yes - Our products are handmade with gentle, natural ingredients suitable for sensitive skin. We always recommend doing a patch test if you’re unsure.

Are your products fragrance-free?

We do not use synthetic fragrances.

Some products contain natural essential oils for their soothing, healing, or balancing properties.

We keep these at safe, skin-friendly levels for sensitive skin.

Do you use preservatives?

Yes — but only natural and eco-certified ones when needed.

Any product that contains water (like our lotions or creams) must be safely preserved to prevent bacteria and mould.

We use gentle, broad-spectrum preservatives that are approved for natural formulations — keeping your product fresh, effective, and safe for your skin, without compromising purity.

Are your products safe for children?

Yes — most of our products are gentle enough for children.

We do recommend avoiding essential oils on very young babies, and always test a small patch first if you’re unsure.

Can I use your products during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Most of our products are gentle enough for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Because some products contain low percentages of essential oils, we recommend checking the ingredients or consulting your healthcare provider if you’re unsure.

We’re always happy to guide you — feel free to reach out to us with any questions.

Do your products contain allergens like nuts or gluten?

Some of our products contain nut-derived oils like almond, kukui or shea.

We do not use gluten ingredients, but if you have severe allergies, please check the ingredient list carefully or contact us before use.

Are your containers recyclable?

Absolutely. Sustainability is at the heart of Dear Nature by Mery.

Our jars and bottles are made from recyclable glass and lids from metals or eco-friendly plastics, chosen with both beauty and responsibility in mind.

We encourage mindful reuse — wash and repurpose your jars for small keepsakes, or recycle them through your local collection service.

Our goal is to keep beauty kind — to your skin and to our planet.

Are your products cruelty-free?

Yes — Dear Nature by Mery is proudly cruelty-free.

We never test on animals, and we never use animal-derived ingredients.

The only exception is ethically sourced animal by-products such as Manuka honey, included in a few formulations for its natural healing and antibacterial properties.

Every ingredient we use is carefully chosen to align with our ethical, sustainable values — because kindness should extend to both your skin and all living beings.

Where are your products made?

Every Dear Nature by Mery creation is handcrafted in small batches in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Each product is carefully formulated and blended using locally sourced and globally trusted botanical ingredients.

Our process is slow, intentional, and rooted in nature — because we believe true skincare should feel as pure and honest as the earth it comes from.

How should I store my products?

Keep your products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Because our formulations are natural and free from harsh preservatives, we recommend using them within 6–12 months of opening for best results.
